Right to light is a form of easement in English law that gives a long-standing owner of a building with windows a right to maintain the level of illumination. It is based on the Ancient Lights law. In effect, the owner of a building with windows that have received natural daylight for 20 years or more is entitled to forbid any construction or other obstruction that would deprive him or her of that illumination. Neighbours cannot build anything that would block the light without permission. The owner may build more or larger windows but cannot enlarge his new windows before the new period of 20 years has expired.

Franklin’s lost expedition was a doomed British voyage of Arctic exploration led by Captain Sir John Franklin that departed England in 1845. His fourth and last expedition was meant to traverse the last unnavigated section of the Northwest Passage. After a few early fatalities the two ships (HMS Erebus and HMS Terror) became icebound in Victoria Strait near King William Island in the Canadian Arctic. The entire expedition complement, including Franklin and 128 men, was lost. Cut marks on human bones found on King William Island were seen as signs of cannibalism.

The Trachtenberg System is a system of rapid mental calculation, somewhat similar to Vedic mathematics. It was developed by the Ukrainian engineer Jakow Trachtenberg in order to keep his mind occupied while being held in a Nazi concentration camp. The system consists of a number of readily memorized operations that allow one to perform arithmetic computations very quickly.

SPQR is an initialism from a Latin phrase, Senatus Populusque Romanus (“The Senate and People of Rome”), referring to the government of the ancient Roman Republic, and used as an official signature of the government. It appears on coins, at the end of documents made public by inscription in stone or metal, in dedications of monuments and public works, and was emblazoned on the standards of the Roman legions. The phrase appears many hundreds of times in Roman political, legal and historical literature, including the speeches of Marcus Tullius Cicero and the history of Titus Livius.

Dempster Highway, also referred to as Yukon Highway 5 and Northwest Territories Highway 8, is a highway that connects the Klondike Highway in Yukon, Canada to Inuvik, Northwest Territories on the Mackenzie River delta. During the winter months, the highway extends another 194 km to Tuktoyaktuk, on the northern coast of Canada, using frozen portions of the Mackenzie River delta as an ice road (the Tuktoyaktuk Winter Road). The highway crosses the Peel River and the Mackenzie Rivers using a combination of seasonal ferry service and ice bridges. The highway begins about 40 km east of Dawson City, Yukon on the Klondike Highway and extends 736 km to Inuvik.

Lake Vostok is the largest of more than 140 subglacial lakes found under the surface of Antarctica. It is located beneath Russia’s Vostok Station, 4,000 metres under the surface of the central East Antarctic ice sheet. It is 250 kilometres long by 50 kilometres wide at its widest point, thus similar in size to Lake Ontario, and is divided into two deep basins by a ridge. It has an estimated volume of 5,400 cubic kilometres and consists of fresh water. The average depth is 344 metres. Ice samples from cores drilled close to the top of the lake have been analyzed to be as old as 420,000 years, suggesting that the lake has been sealed under the icecap for between 500,000 and more than a million years. In May 2005 an island was found in the center of the lake.

Franklin’i ekspeditsioon oli riigi poolt tellitud ning tõenäoliselt oli see üks ekspeditsiooni huku kaudseteks põhjusteks. Sellel teemal on väga huvitava loengu pidanud Mark Thornton: http://mises.org/media/4411
